October 11: The Power of the Dog (2021)
Rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them while dealing with his own feelings. 12 Oscar nominations. Presenter: Maureen McKane
November 15: Julie and Julia (2009)
Julia Child’s story of her start is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell’s challenge to cook all the recipe’s in Child’s first book. Starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci; based on Powell’s book. Presenter: Diane Ellis
December 13: The Thin Man (1934)
Classic comedy-mystery based on Dashiell Hammett’s book stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, who enjoy cocktails and lively banter in equal measure. Presenter: Chuck Adams
January 10: Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Agatha Christie’s famed novel features eccentric detective Hercule Poirot investigating a murder on the infamous train. All-star cast with Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp. Presenter: Marsha Carter
February 14: Loving (2016)
Friday Night at the Movies in February is a joint presentation with NECC’s Students of the Beloved Community committee. A Soul Food Tasting will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m., both in Friendship Hall. “Loving” is a dramatic romance based on a true story between a white construction worker in Virginia and a black woman, whose marriage led to a historic 1967 Supreme Court ruling. Ellen Bonewitz will introduce the movie and lead a short discussion afterward. Please come hungry and ready to eat a delicious Soul Food meal, which will include catfish nuggets, dirty rice, collard greens with smoked turkey, and a tasty dessert. Beverages will also be provided. The tasting and the film presentation are free of charge and no sign up is necessary.
March 14: Antonia’s Line (1995)
After World War II, a Dutch matron and her daughter return to their hometown and form a tightly-knit community of empowered women. Oscar winner for Best International Feature. Presenter: Brian Kleemann
April 11: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Set in rural Mississippi in 1937, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a sheriff pursues them. With George Clooney, John Goodman, Holly Hunter, and a Grammy-winning soundtrack. Presenter: Elaine Ross
