LEARNING TOGETHER. GROWING TOGETHER. WORKING FOR JUSTICE.

Social and Racial Justice

divider plus

At New England Congregational Church, faith is not just something we believe—it’s something we live. The church’s permanent Social & Racial Justice Board grew out of a ministry originally called “Students of the Beloved Community” and continues to be rooted in learning, reflection, and action, as we seek to better understand one another and the world around us.”

Inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the “Beloved Community” calls us to build a world where justice, compassion, and human dignity are shared by all.

This work begins with listening.
It grows through learning.
And it finds expression through action.

What Is the Beloved Community?

divider plus

The Beloved Community is both a calling and a commitment.

Dr. King described it as a vision where every person is valued, injustice is confronted, and love and justice work together to shape society.

It reminds us that:

  • We are all connected
  • We all have something to learn
  • We all have a role to play

NECC’s Social & Racial Justice Board (SRJB) was originally started under the name of “Students of the Beloved Community” that was modeled after the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and as a commitment to maintaining a learning posture when it comes to understanding issues of both social & racial justice. According to the King Center’s website: “Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.”

Our Mission

Continuing the Work of Justice

Our mission is to continue and expand the work of our church’s abolitionist founders by:

  • Fighting systemic injustice
  • Breaking down barriers of separation and exclusion
  • Recognizing our shared humanity
  • Building relationships rooted in dignity and respect

We believe meaningful change begins with understanding both our history and our responsibility.

A Journey of Learning

divider plus

Becoming part of the Beloved Community is not a destination—it’s an ongoing journey.

Together we explore questions such as:

  • What experiences shape the lives of our neighbors?
  • What stories have we not fully heard?
  • Where are we being called to listen, learn, and act?

Through education, conversation, and shared resources, we create space for honest dialogue and deeper understanding.

Why This Work Matters

Faith Calls Us Forward

Justice work is not separate from faith. It is one expression of it.

As followers of Jesus, we seek to love our neighbors, confront injustice, and build communities where all people are valued and respected.

The work is ongoing. So is the invitation.
